Look out! Sista Monica is back! Having survived a life-threatening illness, the blues belter from Santa Cruz has produced an excellent album of blues, gospel, R-&-B, and soul music.

Originally from Gary, Indiana, Monica Parker spent her formative years in Chicago and Detroit and absorbed the influences of such varied artists as Arethra Franklin, Sam Cooke, Luther Allison, Katie Webster, and Roberta Flack. On this album songs by Cooke and Willie Nelson are featured, along with 10 originals. Supported by her long-time keyboard player Danny Beconcini, Parker cuts loose on several blues rockers and croons some moving slow soul and blues tunes. The rotating bass and drum musicians are solid throughout, and guitar leads are shared by such luminaries as Larry McCray, Chris Cain, and Mike Schermer. Parker’s vocals are powerful and emotive, reminiscent of Etta James’s sound but with her own style. This one is a keeper.

Sista Monica passes through Santa Barbara regularly and puts on a great live show. Don’t miss her on her next trip through.
