GIBSON FOUNDATION SUPPORTS LOCAL BLUES-IN-SCHOOLS PROGRAM

Gibson Guitar and the Gibson Foundation (based in Nashville, Tennessee) have partnered with the Santa Barbara Blues Society (SBBS), the oldest blues society in the US, to fund a Blues In Schools program for area students. Laszlo Kiraly, SBBS President and Co-Founder, says of Gibson Guitar’s gift, “This unique contribution by America’s premiere guitar company provides our organization the opportunity to bring the historical and cultural elements of the Blues directly into our local schools.

The Gibson Foundation’s generous donation of an Epiphone “Lucille” model guitar will be raffled off throughout the 2006 season by the non-profit blues organization. Proceeds from the raffle will allow SBBS to provide standards-based classroom programs that will be presented by local musicians and historians at no cost to elementary, middle, and secondary teachers. Leo Schumacher, Director of Special Projects and Promotion for the society, comments, “We can now keep the Blues alive for the next generation of music lovers by teaching them the heritage of this unique genre of American-roots music that has significantly impacted our nation’s musical traditions.

Those interested in learning more about the guitar raffle are directed to the Santa Barbara Blues Society’s website ( www.sbblues.org). Teachers interested in receiving more information about SBBS classroom programs are encouraged to contact Jim Masker at Cate School (684-8409 ext. 277).
